Sectional competition begins first week of November
After weeks on the road, the S’Women of Pittsford enjoyed a little “home cooking” swimming against both Churchville Chili and Canandaigua at Mendon High School last week.
Tuesday’s meet against the Saints of Churchville began with the S’Women going 1-2-3 in the 200 Medley Relay. The “A” relay of Erica Bryson, Mallory Ward, Sarah Dempsey and Kala Wilkins finished in first place with a time of 1:56.83. Second place went to the “B” relay of Jennifer Proper, Danielle Phillips, Amanda House and Elizabeth Maier who swam the event in a time of 2:00.01. The “C” relay of Olivia Holodnik, Danielle Proper, Jennifer Conklin and Erin Connolly finished in third with a time of 2:10.77.
In the 200 Free, Jennifer Conklin (2:07.35), Katie Hart (2:08.59) and Erin Connolly (2:09.89) finished 1-2-3. Churchville’s sole first place finish of the meet came in the 200 IM. With that said, Pittsford finished 2-3-4. Elizabeth Maier, Jenny Riley and Olivia Holodnik finished with times of 2:27.66, 2:28.58 and 2:30.55 respectively. Kala Wilkins won the 50 Free in a time of 26.03. Right behind her was Erica Bryson, swimming the event in a 26.91. In fourth place was Danielle Phillips (27.59).
In the diving competition, Pittsford’s Carrie DeMoulin finished in first place with a score of 187.80. Pittsford went 1-2-3- in the 100 Butterfly. Shannon Dempsey finished first (1:08.36), Maddie Ashworth (1:08.48) second and Danielle Proper (1:09.87) came in third. Jenny Riley won the 100 Free in a time of 58.13 while Danielle Phillips placed second (58.41) and Jennifer Conklin picked up fourth place (1:00.35).
The trio of Erin Connolly (5:45.73), Elizabeth Maier (5:59.01) and Mallory Ward (6:02.29) went 1-2-3 in the 500 Free. In the 200 Free Relay, Pittsford’s “A” team (Shannon Dempsey, Elizabeth Maier, Jenny Riley and Kala Wilkins) finished first in a time of 1:44.64 while the “B” team (Olivia Holodnik, Maddie Ashworth, Katie Hart and Jennifer Proper) finished in second place swimming the event in 1:48.69.
Swimming the 100 Back in a 1:03.69, Sarah Dempsey placed first while Danielle Proper (1:08.81) and Mallory Ward (1:12.73) took third and fourth place.
Amanda House won the 100 Breaststroke in a time of 1:12.68. Kala Wilkins finished in second place (1:17.38) and Katie Hart placed third (1:22.01).
Pittsford’s “A,” “B” and “C” relays finished 1-2-3 in the 400 Free Relay. Sarah Dempsey, Maddie Ashworth, Erica Bryson and Shannon Dempsey took first with a time of 3:49.48. Jennifer Conklin, Danielle Proper, Danielle Phillips and Jenny Riley placed second (4:01.30) and Katie Hart, Erin Connolly, Amanda House and Mallory Ward finished third (4:05.61).
The final score: Pittsford Varsity 102, Churchville Chili 67
The Junior Varsity S’Women experienced similar success against the Saints. The relay team of Stephanie Andrews, Kenzie Ward, Sydney Ryan and Jane Zhu kicked things off taking first place (2:12.32) in the 200 Medley Relay event. The “B” combination of Kaelan Fennell, Andrea Meyer, Lydia Hunt and Jenna Mattina placed second (2:16.03) and Caroline Curran, Emily Waldman, Briana Viera and Rebecca Warner finished third (2:23.83).
Anna Grazulis won the 200 Free in a time of 2:10.84 while Audrey Hunt finished second (2:15.57). Caroline Tuttle placed fifth swimming the event in 2:35.69. The 200 IM was won by Sydney Ryan in a time of 2:32.81. Lydia Hunt picked up second place with a time of 2:40.13 and Elizabeth Petishnok placed fourth (2:53.14). The JV went 1-2-3 in the 50 Free. Stephanie Andrews (28.30), Alyssa Likly (29.41) and Olivia Waldman (29.67) made their mark for Pittsford.
Courtney Stern placed second (58 points) in the diving portion of the meet.
Sydney Ryan (1:11.27) and Genevieve Yaeger (1:16.95) finished 1-2 in the 100 Butterfly while Briana contributed to the victory placing fourth (1:24.08). Again, the JV placed 1-2-3. This time Stephanie Andrews, Lainy Hummel and Caroline Curran out swam the competition in the 100 Free with times of 1:01.87, 1:03.54 and 1:09.02 respectively.
In the 500 Free, Jenna Mattina won it in a time of 6:10.40. Megan Branch finished in fourth (6:28.28) and Nina Daniels placed sixth (6:55.43). The “A” relay team of Anna Grazulis, Sydney Ryan, Jane Zhu and Stephanie Andrews took first (1:52.89) in 200 Free. The “B” relay of Emily Carroll, Lainy Hummel, Olivia Waldman and Kenzie Ward finished second (1:58.32) while Anisha Singh, Genevieve Yaeger, Katie Slebodnik and Emily Waldman of the “C” relay finished third (2:08.23).
Kaelan Fennell finished first in the 100 Back swimming the event in a 1:12.53. Julia Cavanagh took second and Emily Carroll third with times of 1:15.27 and 1:16.39. Pittsford went 1-2-3 in the 100 Breaststroke. With a time of 1:16.63, Kenzie won the event followed by Jane Zhu who came in second (1:19.02) and Andrea Meyer who finished in third (1:21.27).
In the final event of the meet, Pittsford’s three relay teams finished 1-2-3. The “A” group of Anna Grazulis, Lydia Hunt, Jenna Mattina and Audrey Hunt took first in a time of 4:16.68. In second place (4:39.66) was the “B” relay of Meagan Branch, Elizabeth Petishnok, Caroline Tuttle, and Julia Cavanagh. Placing third (4:49.85) was the “C” relay of Katie Slebodnik, Olivia Gallagher, Nina Daniels, Rebecca Warner.

On Thursday, the Pittsford S’Women faced the Braves of Canandaigua Academy. Seats were hard to find as fans of the swimmers from CA arrived plenty early to support their team. An air of anticipation filled the venue at Mendon High School. Pittsford Co-Captain Sarah Dempsey, having been sick for several days, was unable to swim, the Braves were defending an undefeated record and it was Senior Recognition Day; a time of mixed emotions for swimmers, coaches and parents alike.
In the 200 Medley Relay, CA jumped out to an early lead just beating (1:56.19) the “A” team of Erica Bryson, Mallory Ward, Jennifer Conklin and Kala Wilkins who finished second with a time of 1:56.29. Pittsford’s “B” relay of Jennifer Proper, Danielle Phillips, Amanda House and Elizabeth Maier placed fourth (2:00.06).
The results were similar in the 200 Free when Maddie Ashworth came up just short to finish second with a time of 2:03.14 (the CA swimmer swam a 2:03.10 to take first place). Placing fourth and sixth for Pittsford were swimmers Olivia Holodnik (2:06.89) and Danielle Proper (2:09.89).
Going into the 200 IM, the Braves were ahead 20-10 and the visiting fans were understandably pleased. However the gap quickly narrowed when Shannon Dempsey, with a time of 2:17.31, took first place. Danielle Phillips finished in second place (2:19.40) and Jennifer Proper picked up additional points placing fourth (2:22.05). CA’s was now ahead, 24-22.
In the 50 Free, Kala Wilkins came up big and finished first with a time of 25.69. Jenny Riley and Elizabeth Maier also scored points by finishing fourth (26.16) and fifth (26.21) respectively. The meet was now tied, 31-31. In the diving competition, Carrie DeMoulin placed second with a score of 185.40 and Courtney Stern finished fourth. CA’s first and third place finishes allowed them to once again claim the lead with a score of 40-37.
Seniors from both teams were recognized immediately after the diving portion of the meet. The eleven seniors from CA had their names announced followed by members of the Pittsford Varsity team presenting each one with a carnation. Seniors Katie Hart, Jennifer Conklin and Maddie Ashworth were then introduced, memories of their time on varsity read to those in attendance, a bouquet of flowers presented and lots of tears and hugs exchanged. In light of senior Sarah Dempsey’s absence, memories of her four years on the varsity will be shared at a later date.
Once the meet resumed, Erica Bryson’s victory in the 100 Butterfly (1:01.59) along with Jennifer Conklin’s third place (1:04.78) finish and Katie Hart picking up fifth (1:08.19) gave Pittsford the lead for the first time in the meet. With the score now 47-46, the S’Women would never look back!
Kala Wilkins picked up where she left off winning the 100 Free with a time of 56.17. Shannon Dempsey wasn’t far behind finishing third with a time of 56.41 and Elizabeth Maier placed fifth (58.29). Maddie Ashworth finished first in the 500 Free with a dominating time of 5:26.99 while Danielle Proper and Olivia Holodnik went 2-4 with times of 5:36.15 and 5:42.78. The 1-2-4 finish by Pittsford extended the team’s lead, 69-56.
The “A” team of Shannon Dempsey, Elizabeth Maier, Jenny Riley and Kala Wilkins took first (1:42.45) in the 200 Free Relay just beating out CA at the touch. The “B” team of Olivia Holodnik, Maddie Ashworth, Katie Hart and Jennifer Proper finished third (1:46.98). in the 100 Back, Pittsford went 1-2-5. Erica Bryson took first place (1:04.13) while teammates Jennifer Proper (1:05.17) and Jenny Riley (1:08.21) finished second and fifth. Mallory Ward just missed placing first in the 100 Breaststroke. Her time of 1:09.90 was just shy of her CA counterpart (1:09.68). Danielle Phillips and Amanda House took fifth and sixth place with times of 1:12.49 and 1:13.53.
In the final event of the meet, the 400 Free Relay, Pittsford finished 1-3-4. The “A” team of Maddie Ashworth, Jenny Riley, Erica Bryson and Shannon Dempsey took first place with a time of 3:49.14. The “B” team of Jennifer Conklin, Danielle Proper, Danielle Phillips and Olivia Holodnik finished third (3:59.06) and the “C” combination of Katie Hart, Amanda Hart. Mallory Ward and Erin Connolly placed fourth (4:04.84).
After slow start Pittsford went on to beat Canandaigua by a final score of 100-85.
In the Junior Varsity competition, the suspense wasn’t nearly as great. Finishing first in all eleven events, Pittsford got busy immediately winning the 200 Medley Relay. Coming in first (2:09.36) was the relay of Stephanie Andrews, Kenzie Ward, Sydney Ryan and Jane Zhu. In second place (2:14.24) was the combination of Kaelan Fennell, Andrea Meyers, Lydia and Audrey Hunt and in fourth place (2:22.11) was Julia Cavanagh, Nina Daniels, Briana Viera and Katie Slebodnik.
Anna Grazulis won the 200 Free in a time of 2:11.98. Jenna Mattina and Caroline Tuttle placed second (2:20.40) and third (2:35.48) respectively. The JV went 1-2-3 again in the 200 IM. Sydney Ryan took first (2:31.86) followed by Jane Zhu (2:37.99) and Elizabeth Petishnok (2:53.72). In the 50 Free the results were slightly different. This time the threesome of Stephanie Andrews and Olivia Waldman took first (27.47) and second (29.01) while Kenzie Ward picked up fourth place (29.61). Sydney Ryan, Lydia Hunt and Genevieve Yaeger finished 1-2-3 in the 100 Butterfly with times of 1:11.83, 1:14.22 and 1:16.95.
Once again, the team placed 1-2-3 but this time it was in the 100 Free. Anna Grazulis finished in first place with a time of 1:00.61 while Stephanie Andrews and Emily Carroll placed second (1:00.82) and third (1:04.81). The 500 Free was won by Audrey Hunt in a time of 5:50.28. Teammates Lainy Hummel and Meagan Branch finished right behind, going 6:03.36 and 6:26.48 respectively to claim the second and third spots.
The combo of Anna Grazulis, Sydney Ryan, Jane Zhu and Stephanie Andrews finished first in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:51.55. In second place (1:56.42) was the relay team of Alyssa Likly, Briana Viera, Olivia Waldman and Izzy Joynt. Picking up fourth place (2:09.26) was the “C” grouping of Anisha Singh, Emily Waldman, Olivia Gallagher and Rebecca Warner.
Kaelan Fennell won the 100 Backstroke in a time of 1:13.02 while teammates Julia Cavanagh and Caroline Curran took second and third place (1:14.97 and 1:15.46). Kenzie Ward (1:17.27), Jane Zhu (1:18.80) and Andrea Meyer (1:20.67) went 1-2-3 in the 100 Breaststroke.
In the 400 Free Relay, Lydia Hunt, Lainy Hummel, Emily Carroll and Jenna Mattina placed first with a time of 4:17.44. Olivia Gallagher, Nina Daniels, Katie Slebodnik and Emily Waldman took second with a 4:34.53.
With the final three events swum exhibition, Pittsford proved too deep for Canandaigua, winning the meet by a final score of 101-57.
MCCI’s were held on Saturday October 24th. A report on how the Jr. Varsity S’Women fared will follow in a later edition of the paper. Next up for the Varsity team are the preliminaries and finals of the Section Five Championship held on Wednesday and Friday November 4th and 6th at the Webster Aquatic Center (5:00pm).
