It was early the morning of August 17th when a group of over 50 girls from both Mendon and Sutherland High Schools converged on the pool at Mendon to formally begin their defense of the Class A Sectional V Championship. Anyone who is familiar with the storied history of Pittsford Swimming knows all too well that winning the Sectional trophy, affectionately referred to as the “block of wood,” doesn’t come without an exceptionally dedicated coaching staff and a very committed group of athletes who invest countless hours year round perfecting their craft.
This year’s Pittsford S’Women, veterans and new arrivals alike, know all too well that if they are to bring home their eighth consecutive championship this fall, they’ll have to find a new gear and take their swimming to new heights.
Lost to graduation were Katie Dobler, Emma Miller, Rachel House, Meghan Green, Alex Trobe and Emily DiPaulo, three of whom were selected to last year’s All Greater Rochester Swimming Team.
Although replacing that depth and talent will be a challenge, senior Co-Captains Sarah Dempsey, named the Division I Swimmer of the Year in 2008, Maddie Ashworth, returning for her third year on varsity and veteran coach Marty Keating are confident that the tradition of Pittsford Swimming will prevail.
Scheduled for Saturday September 12th, the Owego Invitational marks the start of formal competition. This contest is followed by a dual meet against Rush-Henrietta on Thursday September 17th and the girl’s first home meet on Saturday September 19th against Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse.
Members of this year’s Varsity team include seniors Maddie Ashworth, Jennifer Conklin, Sarah Dempsey and Katie Hart; juniors Erica Bryson, Erin Connolly, Danielle Phillips and Mallory Ward, sophomores; Shannon Dempsey, Amanda House, Danielle and Jennifer Proper, Jenny Riley, and Kala Wilkins and freshmen; Olivia Holodnik and Elizabeth Maier.
Swimming for the Junior Varsity will be Stephanie Andrews, Meagan Branch, Emily Carroll, Julia Cavanagh, Ami Cornell, Caroline Curran, Nina Daniels, Kaelan Fennell, Erin Gaffney, Olivia Gallagher, Anna Grazulis, Lainy Hummel, Audrey and Lydia Hunt, Isabella Joynt, Alyssa Likly, Jenna Mattina, Andrea Meyer, Laura Petishnok, Sydney Ryan, Katie Siebodnik, Anisha Singh, Courtney Stern, Caroline Tuttle, Briana Viera, Emily and Olivia Waldman, Mackenzie Ward, Rebecca Warner, Genevieve Yaeger, and Jane Zhu.
Coaching this group for her twelfth year is Beth Dobberstein and diving under the watchful eyes of Coaches Laura Price and Mark McMann will be junior Carrie DeMoulin.
