The big news of the week was the Varsity’s loss to Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse by the narrowest of margins. Down the entire meet, Pittsford tied it up with a first, third and fifth place finish in the 200 Free Relay (70-70) but CBA would reclaim the lead shortly afterwards going 1-2 in 100 Backstroke. In the end, Pittsford’s first place finish in the final event of the meet, the 400 Free Relay, was simply not enough. CBA, whose swimmers finished in second and third place, secured the victory by a final score of 94-92. Here now, are the specifics.
Sunday’s meet began with the 200 Medley Relay. Pittsford’s “A” team of Erica Bryson, Danielle Phillips, Sarah Dempsey and Kala Wilkins finished 2nd place with a time of 1:54.44. The “B” team of Jennifer Proper, Mallory Ward, Amanda House and Elizabeth Maier finished in 3rd place (1:58.56).
In the 200 Free, Maddie Ashworth (2:03.03) finished in third while Jenny Riley (2:06.13) and Jennifer Proper (2:09.76) finished in fifth and sixth place. The Pittsford S’Women went 2-3-5 in the 50 Free with Shannon Dempsey swimming a 26.18, Kala Wilkins a 26.34 and Elizabeth Maier a 26.71. Going into the diving competition, CBA was ahead by a score of 33-29.
Pittsford’s Carrie DeMoulin, won the competition with a score of 182.65 while teammate, Courtney Stern, contributed to the cause by placing 4th overall. Still the Panthers couldn’t shake off the 4- point lead CBA had managed to achieve.
In the 100 Butterfly, Sarah Dempsey finished second (1:01.18). While right behind her was Erica Bryson with a time of 1:01.87 (third place) and picking up fifth place was Jennifer Conklin with a time of 1:06.30. The order of finish was identical in the 100 Freestyle. Sarah Dempsey once again finished second (57.38), Kala Wilkins finished third with a time of 57.77 and Elizabeth Maier took fifth with a 58.69. Earning a first place finish was proving illusive.
Maddie Ashworth (5:25.90), Danielle Proper (5:32.93) and Olivia Holodnik (5:43.56) finished 2nd, 4th and 5th in the 500 Freestyle event. CBA, at this point, took a six point lead with a score of 66-60.
Excitement was starting to build as the various relay teams prepared to swim the 200 Yard Freestyle event. As predicted, the meet was proving to be exceedingly close and the outcome might just be decided in the final event.
In the 100 Backstroke, Erica Bryson placed third with a time of 1:05.03 while Jennifer Proper (1:05.44) and Jenny Riley (1:05.81) went 4-5. CBA’s 1-2-6 finish provided the necessary points to build back their lead; the score was now 80-76.
In the 100 Breaststroke, Mallory Ward finished second (1:11.32) while Danielle Phillips (1:11.82) placed third. Amanda House picked up fifth place (1:16.02) but the combination of 2nd, 3rd, and 5th place finishes wasn’t enough to close the four point gap that CBA had.
In the end, the Pittsford S’Women’s last chance to capture the win was in the 400 Free Relay. The “A” team of Sarah Dempsey, Jenny Riley, Erica Bryson and Shannon Dempsey were able to win the event with a time of 3:45.39 but CBA’s second, third and sixth place finishes proved too much. In the end, Christian Brothers Academy won by a score of 94 to 92.
